UNCG Graduate Students Bring Computers to Kenya

For over 6 years, graduate students in the UNCG Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry have participated in the National Science Foundation-Sponsored GK12 program Transitioning Minds in a Transitioning Community.  Graduate students in the GK12 program serve as yearlong fellows in local schools, pairing up with teachers to bring cutting edge scientific exploration into elementary school classrooms.  Also as part of the GK12 program, graduate students from our department have made several trips to Kenya to participate in education programs with students in rural areas.

Above left, Dr. Dickson M. Wambua, graduate of the Medicinal Biochemistry PhD program, presents computers to the head teacher of Kalamba Elementary school, Eastern Province, Kenya. The computers donated go towards technological improvement of the schools and are valuable for integrating and introducing technology in the schools involved.  Above right, UNCG Medicinal Biochemistry PhD student Joseph Mwangi performs a chemistry experiment with students in Kenya.
