Plant Cyclic Peptide Biosynthesis Paper Published!

Our paper on the biosynthesis of cyclopeptide alkaloids and related plant side chain cross-linked cyclopeptides is out now in Angewandte Chemie International Edition. We used bioinformatics and metabolomics to uncover a plant biosynthetic cassette responsible for these diverse cyclic peptides. We then applied these insights to find new natural products… Continue reading…

Welcome to Draco!

We are excited to welcome Draco to the lab! He graduated from UNCG in Spring 2022 and decided to continue on to obtain a master’s degree. In the lab, he is working to discover the biosynthesis of RiPPs in eukaryotes. 29 November 2022

Three Successful Defenses!

Our lab has been filled with success in the last few weeks! Ethan defended his master’s thesis, Keelie defended her PhD proposal to become a PhD candidate, and Brigitte defended her thesis proposal. We had a lab lunch to celebrate. It’s been awesome to see everyone progress toward their degrees!… Continue reading…

Plant Cyclic Peptide Biosynthesis Preprint

Check out our first paper up on biorXiv now! Widely Distributed Biosynthetic Cassette Is Responsible for Diverse Plant Side-Chain-Cross-Linked Cyclopeptides https://www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/2022.09.15.507631v1 Plant side-chain cross-linked cyclopeptides are an abundant class of natural products with diverse bioactivities. We uncover a conserved biosynthetic cassette found across eudicots responsible for multiple classes of these… Continue reading…

ASP 2022

We had a great time at ASP 2022. Got to enjoy a nice lab lunch with some friends! 25 July 2022

Grant Funded!

We are so excited to have received an R35 ESI MIRA from NIH/NIGMS to discover and characterize new RiPP biosynthetic pathways from across the tree of life! Looking forward to all the awesome science we will accomplish in the next 5 years! 18 July 2022

Jonathan Chekan

Dr. Jonathan Chekan Awarded a MIRA Award by the NIH

Congratulations to Dr. Jonathan Chekan for receiving a MIRA Award from the NIH! This major external funding help his group to continue doing great work on Ribosomally Synthesized Post-translationally Modified Peptide (RiPP) compounds.

Lab Lunch

We had a great lunch together to celebrate all the lab’s recent accomplishments and future plans! 16 June 2022

ORP and Proposal Defense Success

April was a busy month for the lab. Ayoola successfully presented his Original Research Project (ORP) proposal and Ethan defended his thesis proposal. Congratulations to you both! 22 April 2022

Stella de Lima Camargo

Welcome to Stella

We are excited to welcome Stella to the lab! She was born in Americana, SP, Brazil and earned her B.S. in Chemistry from University of Sao Paulo in 2014. She completed her MSc. in 2016 and her Ph.D. in 2020, both in Science at Center for Nuclear Energy in Agriculture,… Continue reading…
