Probing the Proteome: Proteomics Techniques for Assessing Protein Folding and Stability Changes

Wednesday, October 14th in Sullivan Science Bldg Rm. 201, starting at 1:00 PM

Abstract:

Proteins are the most abundant of the four major macromolecules and are essential for cellular functions ranging from structure to catalysis. It is therefore useful to employ tools such as proteomics to gain a more comprehensive understanding of the dynamic state of a cell. While proteomic methods have traditionally been utilized to identify proteins with altered expression levels, recent emphasis has shifted towards probing protein stability changes. This presentation will discuss two papers in which protein folding and stability measurements were used to identify differentially stabilized proteins. These studies highlight the utility of proteomics, while also exploring new techniques to expand proteome coverage.
