“Metabolomic Techniques for Exploring Several Facets of Fungal Research”
Wednesday, September 23rd in Sullivan Science Bldg Rm. 201, starting at 1:00 PM
Abstract:
Fungi are part of a vast group of diverse organisms that are important to nearly every facet of life, from drug discovery and chemical manufacturing to diseases and food spoilage. Additionally, metabolomics is an incredibly versatile tool that has growing implications in studying the chemistry of fungi. This presentation will look at three different case studies that demonstrate metabolomics as a valuable tool within fungal research. The first will examine its ability to aid in the drug discovery process for anticancer drug leads, which can also be adopted to other disease states as well. The second study will demonstrate its effectiveness in quality control and mycotoxin mitigation within the food storage and agricultural industries. The last study establishes a metabolomics-based technique to link the influence of exogenous treatments on the production of both known and new secondary metabolites.
