SUMMARY:Fall 2026 Graduate Student Seminar Series - Kelsey Custer
DESCRIPTION:The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry presents:\n\n\n\nKelsey Custer \n\n\n\nPh.D. Candidate – Oberlies Group \n\n\n\nLiterature Seminar \n\n\n\n“Metabolomic Techniques for Exploring Several Facets of Fungal Research” \n\n\n\nWednesday\, September 23rd in Sullivan Science Bldg Rm. 201\, starting at 1:00 PM \n\n\n\nAbstract: \n\n\n\nFungi are part of a vast group of diverse organisms that are important to nearly every facet of life\, from drug discovery and chemical manufacturing to diseases and food spoilage. Additionally\, metabolomics is an incredibly versatile tool that has growing implications in studying the chemistry of fungi. This presentation will look at three different case studies that demonstrate metabolomics as a valuable tool within fungal research. The first will examine its ability to aid in the drug discovery process for anticancer drug leads\, which can also be adopted to other disease states as well. The second study will demonstrate its effectiveness in quality control and mycotoxin mitigation within the food storage and agricultural industries. The last study establishes a metabolomics-based technique to link the influence of exogenous treatments on the production of both known and new secondary metabolites.

SUMMARY:Fall 2026 Graduate Student Seminar Series - Jameson Eusebio
DESCRIPTION:The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry presents:\n\n\n\nJameson A. Eusebio \n\n\n\nPh.D. Candidate – Oberlies Group \n\n\n\nLiterature Seminar \n\n\n\n“Using Cytochrome P450 Monooxygenases in the Late-Stage Functionalization and Diversification of Anticancer Natural Products” \n\n\n\nWednesday\, September 30th in Sullivan Science Bldg Rm. 201\, starting at 1:00 PM \n\n\n\nAbstract: \n\n\n\nNatural products continue to be a rich source of anticancer leads\, but the structural complexity of these compounds frequently impedes late-stage functionalization and diversification. Cytochrome P450 monooxygenases are potent enzymes that are capable of direct\, highly regioselective C-H functionalizations under mild conditions without destroying key pharmacophores. This presentation highlights three studies that utilize P450 monooxygenases to overcome the challenge of diversifying natural product structures. These studies demonstrate how incorporating P450 biocatalysis with synthetic chemistry expands the accessible chemical space for discovering anticancer drugs.
