“Natural Products Development at Dow AgroSciences”

Abstract:

Natural product researchers are typically quite familiar with the discovery of novel, bio-active metabolites which have the potential to be turned into commercial products, whether in the pharmaceutical or agrochemical spaces. However, they are often less knowledgeable about the process of developing the initial molecule into a final commercial product. My talk will give an overview of the natural products discovery and development pipeline at Dow AgroSciences, with emphasis on the development program. I will illustrate how analytical science can enable and support product development by describing two case studies we have worked on recently: 1) The development of a high resolution spinosyn-profiling method and its importance to Spinetoram production and 2) Discovery, detection and elimination of spinactin, a minor by-product formed during fermentation of Saccharopolyspora spinosa. I will also briefly describe my career path to illustrate possible alternative areas for a meaningful and impactful industrial career for someone with a natural products (discovery) background.
