As part of the 40th anniversary of Trends in Biotechnology, we were happy to spotlight a seminal achievement in the industrial production of an essential natural product. In 2013, Paddon et. al. achieved the the production of 25 g/L artemisinic acid in yeast coupled with a synthetic approach to yield the antimalarial drug artemisinin.
