Title: “A Review of Research on Chemistry Textbooks”
Advisor – Dr. Nadja Cech

Abstract:

Instructors and students frequently interact with textbooks in the chemistry classroom and beyond. As such, chemistry textbooks can shape the way curriculum material is developed, delivered, and received. In this literature review, we have compiled a complete and comprehensive overview of the trends found in existing analyses of chemistry textbooks. The studies were summarized, and inductive coding was used to identify patterns across over 40 chemistry textbook studies. This review aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the chemistry textbook research that is available in the field of chemical education research to date. This overview can then be used to identify research gaps and guide future research on this topic. Furthermore, instructors, textbook writers, and publishers can use this review to inform instruction and textbook development. This presentation will first provide a general overview of the main trends found in chemistry textbook analyses and then provide a detailed examination of two chemistry textbook analysis papers.
