Abstract:

Dr. Nadja Cech is not your typical chemist. She grew up in a yurt, spending much of her childhood barefoot in streams, climbing trees, and learning about plants from her botanist father. At the age of 14, with little formal education, she started community college, and less than 9 years later had earned a Ph.D. with one of the best-known figures in analytical chemistry, Dr. Christie Enke. Dr. Cech is currently Distinguished Professor of Chemistry at the University of North Carolina Greensboro, and manages an active group of 16 graduate and undergraduate students working to develop new treatments for drug resistant infections. This presentation will cover some of Cech’s recent work, and chronicle the unlikely journey that brought her to her current post. The content will be pitched to a general scientific audience, with plenty of time for questions and discussion.
