Talk Title: Biosynthesis of Rebeccamycin an Important Antitumor Agent

Abstract:

Rebeccamycin, an indolocarbazole, represents a class of natural products first discovered in 1977. This compound itself was identified in 1985 and has since been the subject of numerous studies due to its potential antitumor and antimicrobial properties. The antitumor activity of Rebeccamycin is attributed to its ability to inhibit topoisomerase I, an enzyme targeted by a significant class of anticancer drugs, including camptothecin and its analogues. Despite the promising therapeutic potential of Rebeccamycin and its analogues, sourcing these compounds presents a challenge. This presentation will delve into each step of the biosynthetic pathway of Rebeccamycin, emphasizing the importance of understanding the biosynthesis of this critical molecule.
