Our Department

Welcome to the Graduate Program website for The University of North Carolina at Greensboro Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry. UNC-Greensboro has a tradition of excellence in advanced training for careers in the chemical and biochemical sciences. Our faculty is committed to providing one-on-one learning opportunities for all of our students in the laboratory, and this dedication to quality graduate education translates into very high success rates for our graduates as they pursue careers in science. Our faculty and students are engaged in all areas of contemporary chemical and biochemical sciences to address fundamental challenges related to health, education, environment, and energy. Additionally, our department is home to the Medicinal Chemistry Collaborative, directed by Drs. Nicholas Oberlies and Nadja Cech. The mission of this center is to broaden the impact of natural products and drug discovery research on the UNCG campus, and to facilitate university-industry relationships with local pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies.

Ph.D. program in Chemistry and Biochemistry

The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry offers a Ph.D. degree in Chemistry and Biochemistry. Students in the program can take several core courses designed to provide a fundamental understanding of the chemical and biochemical principles while each student’s background and research interests determine the remainder of their course of study. The program supports the students to perform original and creative scientific research. In addition, opportunities to take part in Internships with local companies are available as part of the training. Greensboro and the Triad Area

The historic city of Greensboro, NC has a population of approximately 260,000.   It is centrally located in the state in a region known as the Triad, which includes Greensboro, High Point and Winston Salem. We are only 60 minutes from the Research Triangle, and our area boasts an uncommonly high concentration of biotechnology companies and institutions of higher education.  Winters in Greensboro are mild and short, with little snow and temperatures that only occasionally drop below freezing. If you enjoy the ocean, Wilmington, NC is about 3 ½ hours to the east, whereas mountain lovers can find hiking and camping opportunities within 1-2 hrs drive to the west. Outdoor activities are plentiful with many parks and hiking trails, while downtown Greensboro offers diverse restaurants and a burgeoning art district. Greensboro affords unique opportunities to explore the rich history of the American south.  The lunch counter sit-ins that played a critical role in the civil rights movement of the 1960s began in Greensboro, and are commemorated by our International Civil Rights Center and Museum.  The largest battle of the Revolutionary War’s Southern Campaign also took place in Greensboro, at a site that is now the Guilford Courthouse National Military Park.
